Written by Peace FM Online
Thursday, July 29, 2010 06:22 PM

New interim Argentina coach Sergio Batista gave his first interview today as the Albiceleste number one and defended his friend and ex-boss Diego Maradona.

Batista is currently in Paraguay directing the Under-20s, but on returning to Argentina next week will be presented as the man to lead La Seleccion into their friendly against Ireland on August 11th. The 1986 World Cup winner admitted however that he is not happy with the conditions surrounding Dieguito's exit from the international scene.

"I thought that he was going to stay, the executive committee [of the AFA] must have their reasons- but Diego did the right things," Batista insisted in an interview with FoxSports.

The Albiceleste are currently without a coach, after last night's news that Diego Maradona's ties with the national team will not be renewed. Youth coach and assistant Sergio Batista will take the reins in Dublin against Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland side. The official press release however confirms that this squad was in fact selected by Maradona before leaving.

On Friday afternoon Buenos Aires was treated to a symphony of car horns in celebration of Brazil's World Cup exit at the hands of Netherlands, and most Argentines were supporting Uruguay against Ghana, bizarrely. Twenty-four hours on the atmosphere here had turned. It's funny what raised expectations can do.

Diego Maradona

Let's try and keep some sense of perspective here. This hasn't been a disastrous campaign as a whole from Argentina. Those of us who were sceptical about Diego Maradona's abilities suspected the quarter-finals should be the natural level of the squad he'd named, whilst there were those who suggested that even that was an optimistic view. A few, believing in Maradona's record as a player and his powers of motivation, thought Argentina could win the thing.
